Step-by-Step Velvet Paint Beginner Guide
Never applied velvet paint before? No problem. Wall FX Velvet is designed to be beginner-friendly โ you don't need professional skills or special equipment. Follow this guide and you'll achieve a beautiful, professional-looking velvet finish on your first try.
What You'll Need
- 1 packet of Wall FX Velvet paint additive
- 2 gallons of eggshell or satin interior paint (same color)
- 4-inch chip brush or Wall FX Faux Finish Brush
- Paint roller and tray (for base coat)
- Painter's tape and drop cloth
Before You Start
Make sure your walls are clean, dry, and free of dust or grease. Fill any holes and sand smooth. Apply painter's tape along all edges and lay down your drop cloth.
Step 1: Apply the Base Coat
Using a roller, apply one full coat of your eggshell or satin paint (Gallon 1) to the entire wall. Allow to dry completely โ at least 2 hours.
Step 2: Mix Wall FX Velvet
Open your second gallon of paint (Gallon 2) and add the full packet of Wall FX Velvet. Stir thoroughly for 3โ5 minutes until fully combined with no powder remaining at the bottom.
Step 3: Apply the Velvet Coat
Using your 4-inch brush, apply the Wall FX Velvet mixture in random X and Z motions. Work in sections of about 2โ3 square feet at a time, maintaining a wet edge as you go. The goal is varied, overlapping strokes โ not uniform lines.
Step 4: Let It Dry
Allow the finish to dry for at least 1 hour. Step back and assess the coverage. Apply a second coat if you want more depth or richer color.
