How to Prep Your Walls for Suede Paint
Good preparation is the secret to a flawless suede finish. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons a suede paint project does not turn out as expected. Here is everything you need to do before you pick up a brush.
Step 1: Clean Your Walls
Wipe down all surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, and grease. For kitchen walls or high-traffic areas, use a mild soap solution and rinse clean. Let the walls dry completely before moving on.
Step 2: Repair Any Damage
Fill holes, cracks, or dents with spackling compound. Once dry, sand smooth with fine-grit sandpaper and wipe away any dust. Suede texture can actually help disguise minor imperfections, but larger repairs should be addressed first.
Step 3: Tape Off Edges
Apply painter's tape along baseboards, trim, ceiling edges, and around outlets and switches. Press the tape down firmly to prevent bleed-through.
Step 4: Lay Down Drop Cloths
Protect your floors and furniture with drop cloths. Suede paint can drip, especially when you are first getting the hang of brush loading.
Step 5: Prime If Needed
If you are painting over a dark color, a glossy surface, or bare drywall, apply a coat of primer first. This ensures even absorption and helps your Wall FX finish look consistent across the entire wall.
