How to Apply Velvet Paint

How to Apply Velvet Paint

Applying velvet paint with Wall FX is straightforward and beginner-friendly. The key is using the right brush and applying paint in smooth, overlapping strokes to build the characteristic soft-sheen finish naturally.

What You'll Need

  • Wall FX Velvet paint additive
  • Eggshell or satin interior paint in your chosen color
  • A 4-inch Wall FX brush or quality chip brush
  • Painter's tape
  • Drop cloth

Step-by-Step Application

  1. Prep your walls โ€” clean, dry, and free of dust or grease. Fill any holes and sand smooth.
  2. Apply a base coat โ€” roll on one full coat of your chosen eggshell or satin paint and allow to dry completely.
  3. Mix Wall FX Velvet โ€” add one full packet to your second gallon of paint and stir thoroughly for 3โ€“5 minutes.
  4. Apply with X and Z motions โ€” use random overlapping strokes to build the velvet texture. Maintain a wet edge as you work.
  5. Work in sections โ€” complete one wall section at a time to avoid lap marks.
  6. Allow to dry โ€” wait at least 1 hour before assessing. Apply a second coat if desired.

Pro Tips

Use eggshell or satin paint โ€” not flat. The slight sheen in the base paint helps Wall FX Velvet achieve its signature luminosity. Keep your brush strokes random and varied; uniform strokes will reduce the depth of the finish. Don't overwork wet paint โ€” apply and move on.
